A popular neighborhood in the northwestern part of Seattle, Ballard is home to seven different elementary schools and five registered historic areas and landmarks. The area was first occupied by the Shilshole Tribe who lived off the ample amounts of salmon and clams, but Ballard didn’t officially became part of Seattle until May of 1907. It is surrounded by Crown Hill to the north, Phinney Ridge to the east, Lake Washington Ship Canal to the south, and Shilshole Bay to the west. Ballard also contains a variety of restaurants and local shops and was once home to the Majestic Bay Theatre, the oldest operating movie theater on the West Coast up until 1997.
